COURSE CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES

  • Demonstrate how to tie specific knots and set up belay stations using removable protection
  • Properly install trad protection
  • Manage your ropes on a multi-pitch in order to belay a leader and a second
  • Be able to rappel safely on multi-pitch routes
  • Basic self-rescue concepts to save a leader or a second climber

Pre-requisite

  • Lead sport climbs and set up top-ropes for at least 2 seasons

Schedule for the day:

Day 1 – 8 hours

  • 8:45 AM: Reception at the LA LIBERTÉ NORD-SUD hut and hand-out of equipment
    • Our hut is 200m from the parking; bring all your belongings
  • 9:00-11:00 AM: Assessment of participants’ knowledge (knots, belaying and rappelling concepts)
  • 11:00 AM-4:00 PM: Practice and theory taught in workshops:
    • Perfect anchor and multi-pitch belay stations
    • Rope management at belay stations
    • Physics of potential falls
    • Gear placement practice on the ground
    • Lead trad climbing (with top-rope backup and/or protection already in place)
    • Rappelling review
    • Communication skills on a multi-pitch
  • 4:00-4:30 PM: Feedback about the day and conclusion
  • 4:30-5:00 PM: Equipment return and end of day
  • Less than 20 minutes, up to a 100m of high difference and 500m of hike to reach the differents crags

Day 2 – 8 hours

  • 8:45 AM: Reception at the LA LIBERTÉ NORD-SUD hut and hand-out of equipment
  • 9:00 AM-12:00 PM: Climbing a multi-pitch route
  • 12:00-2:00 PM: Multi-pitch rappelling
  • 2:00-3:30 PM: Basic self-rescue techniques of the second climber
  • Less than 20 minutes, up to a 100m of high difference and 500m of hike to reach the differents crags

Course cancellation due to weather conditions

The course could be cancelled  if the forecast calls for more than a 60% chance of precipitation and an accumulation of 1 mm or more hourly for the greater part of the day. The decision can be made the day prior to the activity at the latest. Please note that we rarely cancel this course completely due to weather conditions.
