Leading ice climbs is a serious commitment. This training course is essential for anyone wanting to take the leap to climbing classic routes safely and responsibly.
The course takes place over 2 consecutive days (typically Saturday and Sunday). You select the date of the first day and the second day is automatically the next day.
COURSE CONTENT and OBJECTIVES
- Demonstrate how to tie specific knots and set up belay stations on ice falls
- Learning to properly place protections for the lead ice climber
- Managing ropes effectively on multi-pitch climbs, while belaying a leader or second
- Be able to rappel safely on multi-pitch routes
- Basic self-rescue concepts for the leader and second
- Multi-pitch communication

Prerequisites
- Two seasons of ice climbing experience
- Being able to climb WI5 on top rope
- Have lead climbing experience on rock
Schedule for the weekend
Day 1- 8 hours
- Welcome reception at the LA LIBERTÉ NORD-SUD mountain hut and hand out equipment
- 9:00–11:00: Assessment of participants’ knowledge (knots, anchors and rappelling concepts)
- 11:00–15:30: Workshop pratice and theory:
- Building the perfect anchor and multi-pitch belay stations
- Rope management at belay stations
- Physics of potential falls
- Protection placement (on-the-ground practice)
- Lead climbing (with top-rope back up and/or with protections already in place)
- Rappelling review
- Multi-pitch communication
- 16:00: Feedback about the day and conclusion
Day 2 – 8 hours
- 8:45: Welcome reception at the LA LIBERTÉ NORD-SUD mountain hut and hand-out of equipment
- 9:00–12:00: Ascend a multi-pitch route
- 12:00–14:00: Multi-pitch rappelling
- 14:00–15:30: Basic techniques for self-rescuing the second
- 16:00: Feedback about the day and conclusion

- Polar-fleece jacket
- Windproof, soft-shell or waterproof jacket

- Tuque, scarf, mittens and gloves (2 pairs)
- Old ski pants or outdoor pants (high probability of tearing your pants with crampons)bring tape if your pants are baggy around the calves

- Snowshoes and trekking poles for the approach if conditions are snowy

Materiel ( vis à glace, dégaine avec absorbeur d’énergie, etc ) en très bonne condition, formation grandement appréciée incluant mise en situations et conseils de pro, déjà inscris pour Montagne 3, juste trop hâte que ca débute !!!
